Ketamine therapy

Revolutionizing mental health management with oral ketamine.

Ketamine began as a surgical anesthetic. Research has since shown its potential for mental health conditions — especially for people who have not responded to traditional therapies.

What is ketamine?

Ketamine primarily functions as a noncompetitive NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist. Through its action on NMDA receptors it modulates the release and uptake of glutamate, leading to downstream effects on other neurotransmitter systems including GABA, dopamine and serotonin.

Can ketamine be taken orally?

Traditionally ketamine has been given by intravenous infusion or intramuscular injection. Advances in pharmaceutical formulation have produced oral forms that can be taken without needles. Oral ketamine is now considered one of the most convenient and acceptable forms of use, and is usually taken in the presence of a competent caregiver who can take responsibility for the patient after the session.

Pill form

Ketamine pills are swallowed whole and absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Their advantage is convenience and ease of use; onset is slower than other routes because the medication passes through digestion first.

Sublingual and troche forms

Sublingual tablets and troches dissolve under the tongue, allowing absorption through the oral mucosa. Many patients find this route comfortable, and it can be used within a supervised telehealth plan.
